Mechanisms of Biodiversity Maintenance and Adaptive Evolution

Background

This platform is based on College of life sciences. It integrates ecology, cytobiology,biochemistry and developmental biology, among which, ecology and cytobiology are the Second-level National Key Disciplines, Biology is First-level Beijing Municipal Key Discipline. There are two Ministry of Education key laboratories, two Beijing Municipal Key Laboratories and one Beijing Municipal Engineering Center in the platform.
We have an excellent research group, including 2 Academicians of Chinese Academy of Sciences, 1 Changjiang scholar, 4 Distinguished Young Scholars of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, 1 member supported by Program of Global Experts(B), 6 faculty members supported by New Century Excellent Talents Program. Ecology group was recognized by the National Natural Science Foundation of China as “Innovative Research Group”.

Objectives

We aim to achieve such goals in about ten years.
(1) Biology and Ecology will become First-level National Key Displines.
(2) Biochemistry and Developmental Biology will become Second-level National Key Displines.
(3) 1 or 2 Innovative Research Groups will be found by the National Natural Science Foundation of China.
(4) 3 or 4 research groups will become Municipal or Ministry Innovative Research Groups.
(5) The Platform will be expected to earn international fame for its research and graduate education in the broad area of biodiversity.

Contents

1. Discipline development
We are going to focus on the development of Ecology, Cytobiology,Biochemistry and Developmental Biology. We aim to make Ecology and Cytobiology worldwide famous disciplines. Biology and Ecology will be ranked in Top 10 in China
2. Research
(1)The mechanisms of biodiversity maintenance
(2)The conservation of endangered species and the ecological adaptation of their behavior
(3)The molecular mechanisms of adaptive evolution
(4)The molecular mechanisms of cell proliferation & regulation biology
(5)The molecular mechanisms of plant developmental signal transduction

3. Graduate education
We plan to improve the quality of graduate student curriculum, research and the student experience through continuous innovation, to offer more options for students to choose mentors; to raise more funds for students to study abroad. We hope 4-5 students could win the award of "National Excellent 100 Doctoral Dissertation" program in ten years.
4. Team Development
The platform offers career opportunities for the worldwide scientists who are at the top of their fields, or young promising Doctors and Postdoctoral Fellows. We promise to provide competitive compensation and benefits, a supportive work environment, and other opportunities for those who are interested in joining us. We plan to introduce or cultivate 2-3 academicians of Chinese Academy of Sciences and/or Chinese Academy of Engineering, 5-6 Changjaing scholars, 8-10 faculty members selected by New Century Excellent Talents Program.. We are going to build a top research team with a reasonable age structure, outstanding research features and strong research capacity.
5. International communication and cooperation
We plan to cooperate with at least 10 worldwide famous universities through “111 project” and establish a joint laboratory with one of them, to invite 20-30 visiting scientists who are at the top of their fields each year, to host 5-8 important international academic conferences in ten years, to obtain 1-2 major international cooperation projects of NSFC.
6. Public Services
Our research on endangered species conservation will submit 3-6 consultative reports to local or central government to help them make right policies on nature reserve program and rational utilization of resource. We also focus on the investigation and development of new technology of early tumor diagnosis which will be a great contribution to improve human health.
7. laboratory
We plan to build 6 research laboratories and one model base of endangered pheasant breeding with the investment of “985 project”. The 6 research laboratories are Biodiversity, Ecological Function Lab, Genetic Diversity and Molecular Evolution Lab, Computational Molecular Biology Lab, Genetic Engineering Drugs Lab and Plant Developmental Genetics Lab. All these labs and base will be equipped with cutting-edge facilities in ten years.
